After surviving a thrilling encounter with Dominika Cibulkova, world No.4 Garbine Muguruza eliminated rising star Nicole Gibbs much faster than expected, beating the American 6-1 6-0 in the third round of the Miami Open.

The 23-year-old Gibbs, who has climbed from No.119 to No.74 in the rankings this year, was trying to replicate her breakthrough fourth-round result from Indian Wells, but it was vital for her to serve well against Muguruza in Miami, and that aspect of her game was simply not there today, allowing the Spaniard to race through the match.

Muguruza stormed through the first set, as just 42% of Gibbs’ first serves were in and she was easily giving away her service games. The second set was a similar story, only that in the second set Gibbs managed to get one break point chance, but she failed to convert it and Muguruza improved to a 5-0 lead, soon afterwards bageling her opponent.

The fourth-seeded Muguruza will face seed No.13 Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round, as the Belarusian beat Magda Linette 6-3 6-0 earlier on Sunday.
