The 2016 Fed Cup final started with two thrilling singles matches that kept fans on their feet and after the first day of action the French and Czech teams are tied at 1-1.

First off, Karolina Pliskova faced Kristina Mladenovic in what became an epic three-and-a-half-hour encounter thanks to Fed Cup’s rule of not having tiebreaks in the third set. Pliskova ended up winning the marathon affair 6-3 4-6 16-14, giving the Czech’s an early lead.

The Czech victory put the pressure on Carolina Garcia, who faced the task of avoiding the French team to be 0-2 after Day 1. The Frenchwoman’s opponent was Czech Fed Cup veteran Petra Kvitova, who didn’t have a particularly good day though, hitting more than 50 unforced errors on the way to being upset in straight sets.
