Photos from Rome: Kerber & Cibulkova make early exits

Angelique Kerber’s woes continued at the 2017 Internazionali BNL d’Italia as the world #1 suffered another second-round loss.

Following early losses in Stuttgart and Madrid, Kerber fell prey to Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit in Rome, being unable to win a single game in the second set. The world #1 wasn’t the only top player who made a premature exit in Rome today, as Dominika Cibulkova lost a lengthy three-set battle on the scenic Pietrangeli court to Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova. Earlier on Wednesday, freshly-crowned Madrid champion Simona Halep found herself in the same situation in the same spot, but found a way to battle bast Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the scorching Rome mid-day sun.

The third round of the 2017 Internazionali BNL d’Italia is due to be played tomorrow, so keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog for all the latest from Rome.

  1. Both Angie and Domi are not playing well this season. I think Angie will leave the Top 10 after this year. She hasn’t found the magic that brought her to two slams last year. I think she really needs to boos her confidence after the clay court season.
