Ukrainian world No.5 Elina Svitolina recorded two victories over Top 4 players in one day at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, following up her quarterfinal win over Garbine Muguruza with a swift triumph over defending champion Simona Halep.
The fifth-seeded Svitolina conquered the second-seeded Halep unexpectedly quickly, in only 56 minutes, racing to 5-0 leads in both sets. In the first set Halep held serve in the sixth game for the first time, avoiding a bagel, while in the second set she broke her opponent for the first time in the sixth game, only to postpone the inevitable defeat, 6-1 6-1. Helped by Halep’s auto-destructive 34 unforced errors, the 22-year-old Svitolina reached her fifth WTA final of the season.
Svitolina’s opponent in the concluding match of the Premier 5 tournament will be sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki, who will play her sixth final of 2017, having a discouraging 0-5 record in the previous five, while Svitolina won all the four finals she played this year.
Simona needs to regroup. I know she can be no.1 too this year.
Emman Damian, if she wins the title in Cincinnati, she’s get the No.1 ranking. This WTA article explains it all: http://www.wtatennis.com/news/wta-insider-inside-numbers-battle-no1-heads-cincinnati-western-southern-open-karolina-pliskova-simona-halep-elina-svitolina
