In the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open, top seed Simona Halep needed just 51 minutes to progress past Ekaterina Makarova, while Maria Sharapova ended her three-match losing streak by easing past J&T Banka Prague Open runner-up Mihaela Buzarnescu. Home-nation darling Garbine Muguruza kicked off the tournament by dispatching Peng Shuai, while Caroline Wozniacki won nine of the last ten games to beat Daria Gavrilova.

Victoria Azarenka celebrated her first claycourt win in two years by defeating Aleksandra Krunic and confirmed that she’ll play the clay and grass season in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Fresh Rabat champion Elise Mertens and fresh Prague champion Petra Kvitova continued their winning ways in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open, recording straight-set victories over Alison Van Uytvanck and Lesia Tsurenko, respectively. Petra recharged batteries in her homecountry, as she got to spend precious time with her family:

My parents spent the time with me in my apartment all week. After many years we spent the whole week together. We didn’t argue or anything! It was great. My mom spoiled me. ‘Do you want a water?’ ‘Mom, I can stand myself.’ ‘No, I get it.’ I felt a little weird.

We also have photos of the tournament celebrating 10 years of women’s tennis in the Caja Magica, Elena Vesnina doing the WTA Blindfold Serve Challenge, and several photos of players warming up in the morning.
