Tennis players are susceptible to injuries, but to get one at a press conference during a Grand Slam and be forced to withdraw from the tournament because of it, that’s a whole new level of bad luck. Petra Kvitova fell and hurt her ankle during media requirements after her Sunday’s first-round victory over Greet Minnen.

After an MRI and much discussion with my team, I have made the tough decision that it would be unwise to play on it.

The two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova hopes that she’ll be able to recover in time for the grasscourt season.

The eleventh seed’s withdrawal is giving Elena Vesnina a walkover into the third round. In the first round, Vesnina earned the first singles win of her comeback from maternity leave, defeating lucky loser Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-0 in 58 minutes.
