Seventeen-year-old American Coco Gauff will not be able to play her first Olympic Games because she has tested positive for COVID-19.

The world No.25 Gauff said in a statement on social media:

I am disappointed to share the news that I have tested positive for COVID and won’t be able to play in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be many chances for me to make this come true in the future.

Gauff hasn’t revealed whether she has symptoms. We only know that her test came out positive. British Johanna Konta also pulled out because of COVID-19, as the illness prevented her from getting proper preparation for the tournament. The long list of Tokyo withdrawals also includes Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Sofia Kenin, and Bianca Andreescu.
