Defending champion Naomi Osaka is through to the third round of the US Open without even stepping on court on Day 3, as her opponent Olga Danilovic had withdrawn before their second-round match.

The world No.145 Danilovic, one of 20 tournament debutantes, was supposed to encounter Osaka on Arthur Ashe Stadium during Wednesday’s day session, but organisers announced the Serb’s withdrawal shortly before the pair were set to walk out. The 20-year-old Danilovic revealed on Instagram that she had been dealing with a non-COVID-related viral illness in the past few days.

Osaka is on a 16-match Grand Slam winning streak and is trying to win her third US Open title in four years. Her third-round opponent will be the winner of the match between Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi or Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
