Spain’s world No.47 Sara Sorribes Tormo eliminated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a confident 6-3 6-1 victory.
Playing only her second match on clay this season, her least favorite surface, former world No.1 Osaka outweighed her 23 winners with 25 unforced errors, while her opponent kept those stats in equilibrium with 3/3. Sorribes Tormo’s superiority was most evident in the first serve department, which translated into a much greater number of break point opportunities, which the Spaniard converted 4 out of 9.
After the win, Sorribes Tormo sat in her chair and covered her face with a tower while she was crying with happiness. Her third-round opponent in Madrid will be Daria Kasatkina, who upset fourth seed Maria Sakkari 3-6 6-3 6-1 earlier on Sunday.
In other second-round matches, Anhelina Kalilna upset seventh seed Garbine Muguruza 6-3 6-0 to post her first Top 10 win, while Bianca Andreescu continued to build her comeback with a dominant 6-1 6-1 win over Danielle Collins. When it comes to young 2021 US Open finalists, Emma Raducanu took just 64 minutes to beat Marta Kostyuk, while Leylah Fernandez got upset by Jil Teichmann 6-4 6-4 in the second round of the Madrid Open.
