Iga Swiatek powers past Jessica Pegula into Roland Garros semifinals

Top seed Iga Swiatek of Poland completed the 2022 French Open semifinal line-up with a 6-3 6-2 win over 11th-seeded American Jessica Pegula on Wednesday. The overwhelming title favorite is now on a 33-match winning streak, having won 48 of her last 50 sets.

After letting a break lead slip away at the very beginning of the match, Swiatek won four consecutive games from 2-3 to comfortably take the first set. In the second set, the 2020 Roland Garros champion, who turned 21 a day before this quarterfinal, never dropped serve as she broke her opponent twice to sail into the final four in Paris.

Swiatek’s semifinal opponent will be seed No.20 Daria Kasatkina, who is through to her first Grand Slam semifinal after a 6-4 7-6(5) victory over Veronika Kudermetova. The other women’s singles semifinal pair at the French Open is 18th seed Coco Gauff vs. Martina Trevisan.
