Agnieszka Radwanska is getting involved with professional tennis for the first time since retiring from the sport in November 2018. The former world number two and her husband Dawid Celt will be captains of the Polish team at the upcoming United Cup, a mixed-team event in Australia.
The December 29 – January 8 United Cup is a new 11-day tournament that brings together WTA and ATP players who are divided into 18 teams representing their countries. Poland will have an exceptionally strong presence with WTA No.1 Iga Swiatek and ATP No.10 Hubert Hurkacz.
“It’s going to be a challenge for me as well to coach such good players like Iga and Hubert,” the 2012 Wimbledon finalist Radwanska said. “Playing is one thing, but sitting on the bench is another thing. I don’t know what is more difficult to be honest, so I guess we’ll see there.”
Other players in the Polish team at the 2023 United Cup will be: Magda Linette, Weronika Falkowska, Alicja Rosolska, Daniel Michalski, Kacper Zuk, and Lukasz Kubot.
The first six days of the United Cup will feature round-robin group competition consisting of both mixed doubles and singles matches. Poland will play in Brisbane, in Group B versus Kazakhstan and Switzerland. Here you can read details about the relatively complex format of the United Cup, a tournament played in three Australian cities.
Radwanska has experience in similar events, as she won the 2015 Hopman Cup alongside Jerzy Janowicz:
“Events like this, it’s always very exciting, especially when you can combine men and women in one team. You can enjoy tennis more, to be all together in one bench, cheering for each other and, you know, jumping there on the chairs. … I had a couple of events like this, and it’s really something that you want to play and want to do because it’s just different from any other tournaments.”
