Three and a half years after taking over as Muguruza’s head coach, the former world No.2 and 1994 Wimbledon champion Martinez announces an amicable split:

Garbine and I have decided by mutual agreement to end our business relationship. These have been fantastic years, full of great emotions and wonderful experiences, both on and off the court. It has been a pleasure working with you, Garbine. I wish you the best #friendship

Before becoming Muguruza’s main coach in November 2019, Martinez led the former top-ranked WTA player to the 2017 Wimbledon title, her second triumph at a Grand Slam event. In 2021, Martinez was named the WTA Coach of the Year, having helped Muguruza win three titles that season: Dubai, Chicago 500, and her first season-ending WTA Finals title in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The 29-year-old Muguruza, currently ranked No.131, is going through a rough period in her career, having not won more than two matches in a row since the 2021 Guadalajara triumph. She’s recently announced that she’ll be skipping the clay and grass seasons to spend more time with her loved ones. (photo: Jimmie48)
