These Odense-born and Warsaw-born tennis stars have more in common than it may seem at first glance. Besides being Grand Slam champions, they share Polish as their mother tongue. Even though Wozniacki was born and raised in Denmark, the country she represents on the WTA Tour, her family originates from Poland, so Polish is one of the languages she has been familiar with since birth.

Defending US Open champion Swiatek and the 2009 and 2014 runner-up Wozniacki practiced together on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday. After retiring in January 2020 and giving birth to two children, Wozniacki revived her career at the Omnium Banque Nationale earlier this month. So far, she’s played three matches, her sole win being in her first comeback match, against qualifier Kimberly Birrell in Montreal.
