In her final tennis season before retirement, Danielle Collins reached a career milestone with her longest tour-level winning streak. The American extended her streak to 13 consecutive wins by following up her Miami Open triumph with a title at the Credit One Charleston Open.
World No.22 Danielle Collins, unseeded at the WTA 500 tournament in Charleston, delivered a commanding performance in Sunday’s final, defeating fourth seed Daria Kasatkina with a score of 6-2 6-1. Despite Kasatkina’s strong desire for victory, she faced defeat for the third time in her three finals this season. Previously, the Russian finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko in Adelaide, Australia, in January, and to Elena Rybakina at Abu Dhabi a month later.
Following her triumph in Miami, Collins continued her impressive form by upsetting a number of prominent WTA players on the green clay of Charleston. In addition to her victory over Kasatkina, Collins also defeated Paula Badosa, Ons Jabeur, Sloane Stephens, Elise Mertens, and Maria Sakkari.
Collins has become only the fourth unseeded champion in the Charleston tournament’s history. The 30-year-old joins the ranks of Iva Majoli (2002) and Justine Henin (2005). Interestingly, Daria Kasatkina, whom Collins defeated in the 2024 final, clinched her first WTA singles title at Charleston in 2017 as an unseeded player.
During her week in Charleston, Collins also opened up about her happy love life and gave details about her boyfriend, who took time from his busy work schedule to support her at the tournament.
As recently as in early February, Collins was ranked No.71, while now her ranking is projected to rise to No.15. Her career-high was No.7, achieved in July 2022.
The former representative of New Balance is currently without a clothing sponsor, but she’s been wearing Free People Movement apparel in Miami and Charleston. Her tennis shoes are Adidas Stella Court, her racket is Tecnifibre.
