The USTA revealed the recipients of the women’s singles main draw wildcards for the 2024 US Open. The list is headlined by four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, and a group of American players including McCartney Kessler, Amanda Anisimova, Alexa Noel, and Iva Jovic. Additionally, France’s Chloe Paquet and Australia’s Taylah Preston have been granted wildcards through reciprocal agreements.
Former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who claimed two of her four Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2018 and 2020, made her return to the court in January after giving birth to her daughter. Despite successfully breaking back into the WTA Top 100, Osaka acknowledges that she is still adjusting postpartum and that playing tennis doesn’t feel as natural as it once did.
Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, is currently ranked No. 166. The 24-year-old returned to the court earlier this year after a nine-month absence due to a back injury. In her first event back, she made it to the third round at Roland Garros and, in June, reached her first WTA final in nearly two years on the grass of the Libema Open.
Amanda Anisimova, 22, secured her wildcard for the US Open by winning the Wildcard Challenge, highlighted by a strong run to the final at the WTA 1000 in Toronto. The former world No. 21 made her return to the tour in January after an eight-month break in 2023 for mental health reasons. In just her second tournament back, she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and, thanks to her performance in Toronto, has re-entered the WTA Top 50.
McCartney Kessler, 25, is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 100. The former All-American from the University of Florida made her Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2024 Australian Open after securing her spot by winning the USTA’s Wildcard Challenge, where she advanced to the second round. She also qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon and claimed the singles title at the USTA Pro Circuit W75 event in Rome, Georgia, not far from her hometown of Calhoun.
Alexa Noel, 21, earned her US Open wildcard by winning the NCAA singles title as a redshirt junior at the University of Miami in May. This marks her return to the US Open for the first time since 2019, when she competed in the doubles main draw as the USTA Girls’ 18s national doubles champion.
Iva Jovic, 16, secured her spot at the US Open by winning the singles title at the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships. Currently ranked No. 5 in the ITF world junior rankings, she has also claimed girls’ doubles titles at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year. Jovic has been instrumental in leading the U.S. to consecutive Junior Billie Jean King Cup titles.
Chloe Paquet, 30, is currently ranked No. 97, just one spot shy of her career-best ranking of No. 96. She received her US Open wildcard through a reciprocal agreement between the USTA and the French Tennis Federation (FFT), which allows for the exchange of wildcards between the US Open and Roland Garros.
Taylah Preston, 18, who is currently ranked No. 146, made her Grand Slam debut at the 2024 Australian Open. She earned her US Open wildcard through a reciprocal agreement between the USTA and Tennis Australia, which facilitates the exchange of wildcards between the US Open and Australian Open.
In addition, the USTA announced the American women who will compete in the US Open qualifying tournament, held August 19-22 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. This group includes former world No. 1 junior Clervie Ngounoue, 2022 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion Liv Hovde, and other emerging talents such as Tyra Grant, Akasha Urhobo, Sophie Chang, Mary Stoiana, Kristina Penickova, Julieta Pareja, and Valerie Glozman.
The 2024 US Open will be played August 26-September 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
