In a first-round clash at Roland Garros between two mothers from the same generation, two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka delivered a super dominant 6-0 6-0 win over former world No. 12 Yanina Wickmayer. With the victory, Azarenka became the oldest player in the Open Era to record a double bagel in a Grand Slam main-draw match.

Victoria Azarenka

Belgian Wickmayer recently announced her decision to end her tennis career at Wimbledon this year, but the demolition she experienced today in Paris might push her to speed up her retirement. The 2009 US Open semifinalist, currently ranked No. 1140, held just one game point during the 48-minute match against Azarenka!

The 35-year-old Wickmayer started her pro career in 2004 and won five WTA titles, her last one being Washington DC in 2016. After a maternity break following Roland Garros 2020, during which she gave birth to her daughter Luana, she returned in 2022 and climbed back into the Top 100 in 2023, reaching two tour-level semifinals. In 2024, an injury kept her off the court for nine months. Despite the setbacks, she remained determined to finish her career on her own terms. Wickmayer returned in January 2025, and after more than 20 years in the sport, her tennis journey is now nearing its end.

Azarenka’s opponent in the second round of Roland Garros will be Sofia Kenin. It will be a matchup featuring two former Australian Open champions with three Melbourne titles between them.
