Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova clinched the Vanda Pharmaceuticals Athens Open title on Sunday, ending Maria Sakkari’s hopes of a historic home victory with a 7-6(5) 6-3 win in the final. The Greek No. 1 had been aiming to complete a remarkable family milestone, 40 years after her mother Angeliki Kanellopoulou reached the final of the Athens Trophy, the last WTA Tour event held in the capital of Greece.
Making her Athens debut as the only Grand Slam singles champion in the draw, Krejcikova overcame an early 4-1 deficit in the opening set to force a tiebreak and edge it 7-5, then rallied after Sakkari broke her serve for a 2-1 lead in the second by winning five of the final six games to claim her ninth career title and first since her 2024 Wimbledon triumph.
Krejcikova captured the title after a successful run through the WTA 250 draw, defeating Viktoriya Tomova, Carole Monnet, Zheng Qinwen, top seed Clara Tauson, and finally home favorite Sakkari in the championship match.
