Naomi Osaka reached the Washington quarterfinals for the first time in her career after advancing via her opponent’s retirement, with her bright floral Nike outfit once again becoming a major talking point.

Osaka led 6-3 3-1 in the second round when Ashlyn Krueger was forced to retire due to injury. The third-seeded Japanese made a fast start, racing out to a 4-1 lead before Krueger took a medical timeout for treatment on her right foot.
Osaka went on to close out the first set by converting her third set point. When Osaka built a 3-1 advantage in the second set, Krueger concluded she was unable to continue, with the injury later confirmed as a right ankle issue.

Making her third appearance at the Mubadala DC Open, Osaka debuted a fuchsia version of her floral Wimbledon dress, completing the look with a matching jacket and Zoom GP Challenge 1.5 sneakers in the same vibrant pink shade.
In her two previous appearances in Washington, in 2025 and 2018, Osaka exited in the second round. This time, she has gone one step further after receiving a first-round bye. Her quarterfinal opponent will be Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
All seven of Osaka’s career titles have come on hard courts, including her four Grand Slam triumphs: the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, and the US Open in 2018 and 2020.
