The 2023 French Open has just raised the bar in terms of prize money. The Grand Slam in Paris has announced that the total prize money for this year’s event will amount to an impressive €49.6 million (approx. $54 million), a remarkable increase of 12.3% from the previous year.
What makes this year’s prize money allocation special is that it features a more even distribution among players. In a bid to reduce the disparity between top-seeded players and those in lower ranks, organizers have increased the prize pot for the Roland Garros singles draws by 9.1%. This means that players who lose in the first three rounds will receive between 11% and 13% more this year, compared to 2022.
Furthermore, the three rounds of the qualifying competition will also see an average increase of 11.8% in prize money. This is a positive step towards acknowledging the efforts of lesser-known players who often go unrecognized in the sport.
But that’s not all. The prize money for the men’s and women’s doubles events has also gone up by 4%, and the allocation for the wheelchair and quad competition has been raised by a staggering 40% from 2022. These increases demonstrate the tournament’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in the sport.
Women’s and men’s singles champions will each receive €2.3 million (approx. $2.5 million).
The 2023 French Open is set to take place from May 28 to June 11.
