The draw for the 2008 Fed Cup World Group and World Group II play-offs was announced and it was determined that Croatia will face Serbia in April’s World Group II play-offs. Croatian captain Goran Prpic didn’t hide his disappointment and said that that was the worst draw for them as Serbia currently has the strongest Fed Cup team in the world.
If both world No.2 Ana Ivanovic and world No.4 Jelena Jankovic go to Zagreb to play Fed Cup in April, Croatian team will indeed have a tough task as their highest-ranked female tennis player is world No.139 Jelena Kostanic Tosic.
Even though the tie will be played in Croatia, with the home team having the advantage of choosing the surface, Prcic believes it’s all the same and is not convinced that it will help them much.
Kostanic Tosic said that it’s good her team have home advantage, but that will not help them too much having in mind they might play against Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic who are very good on both clay and hard surface. Kostanic Tosic also said that even if only one of them (Ivanovic or Jankovic) joins the Serbian Fed Cup team, the Croatian team will have a hard time.
The ties will be held the weekend of April 26-27. The four winning nations will qualify for World Group II in 2009, while the four losers will start in Zonal Group I in 2009. (source in Serbian: Srbija Sport)
