Vera Zvonareva claims Indian Wells title by beating Ana Ivanovic in the final

After claiming the 2009 Indian Wells doubles title with Victoria Azarenka, Vera Zvonareva went on to win in singles too, defeating defending champion Ana Ivanovic 7-6(5) 6-2 in the Sunday’s final.

The fifth-seeded Ivanovic started both sets with a 2-0 lead. In the first set Zvonareva won four games in a row to give herself a 4-2 lead, then Ivanovic came back and was even close to taking the first set, but lost in the tiebreak, while in the second the fourth-seeded Zvonareva won all the games after Ivanovic’s initial lead.

Russia’s Zvonareva has won her ninth career singles title on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and second this season.

Zvonareva is projected to replace Venus Williams at the No.5 spot when the rankings are released on Monday. Ivanovic will remain world No.7.

  1. Ana had the easiest draw at Indian Wells, on top of that she had a walk over in the quarters, and she lost to the only top ten player she faced. Ana did not have a quality win at Indian Wells, Ursula Radwanska had more qualities win than Ana (she defeated Kutznesova). WTA should focus more on quality wins than the accumulation of points, because all you get is a player who plays a lot of tournaments, racks up a bunch of points, becomes the number one rank player in the world with no grand slams.

  2. Both players were good, but the wind was terrible and who knows what would be that there wasn’t a wind.

  3. ana ivanovic, as carlos mentioned was just lucky to be in the finals. vera is proving to be a very consistent player. she s gonna places. good luck vera. azarenka is showing great improvement.

  4. Vera totally deserved to win. She was the better player in the final. Ana wasn’t demolished, we have to say, she had more than one chance to prevail in the match, but she wasn’t able to realize them.

The wind must have played the role, but after all, they were both playing in the same conditions.

  5. Vera is probably one of the most consistent performers on tour when the Venus and Serena are not considered. I believe she will do big things this year. I hope to see Azarenka and Pavlyuchenkova doing very well in Miami aswell.
