Caroline Wozniacki at Roland Garros 2009Second seed Serena Williams avoided the fate of her sister Venus, and recovered from being a set down to beat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain 4-6 6-3 6-4 and move into the fourth round of the French Open.

The match was accompanied by one incident in the first set, because of which Williams called her opponent a cheat. Martinez Sanchez broke to lead 3-2, although the crucial point-winning shot appeared to rebound off her arm.

“The ball did touch her 100 percent on her arm. The rules of tennis are when the ball hits your body, then it’s out of play […] She should have lost the point instead of cheating,” said the ten-time Grand Slam champion Williams.

However, Martinez Sanchez insisted she was innocent.

“I put the racquet up. The ball was in and it was a point for me. It didn’t hit me or my body. To say I’m a ‘cheat’ is stupid. I’m not going to comment on it.”

Tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki lost to world No.41 Sorana Cirstea of Romania 7-6(3) 7-5. Wozniacki, who has recently become the first Danish WTA player to crack the Top 10, needed a medical time-out for a back problem when just two points from defeat.

Other notable third-round results of the day: Samantha Stosur upset Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova dispatched Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3, Jelena Jankovic stormed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 crushing of Jarmila Groth, Victoria Azarenka defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 5-7 7-5 6-2, and Agnieszka Radwanska beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4. 1. Wozniacki by using the means that got her to the top ten were the same means got her worn out. I’m not surprise about her loss. If she was faking the injury, due to the circumstances of the match I would consider it cheating, even though Caroline considers Cirstea her friend, also her RG doubles partner.

  2. Two defending champions out in less than one hour. Ana Ivanovic getting defeated is not so surprising for me, and it was fast. But (I know this is a women’s tennis website but this is too surprising to not mention), Rafael Nadal is finally beaten in four years! Can you believe that.

    Robin Soderling did his homework very well. Very well. He fired 70 winners, that must be a record. Felt sorry for Rafa as well.

    Maria’s match is coming up, good luck to her.

  3. Thanks for Rafa update Teerin, I did not see this coming, very surprising.

    Dinara/Azarenka this might be the match of the tournament. I’ll take Dinara in three sets.

  4. Another day at Roland Garros, another three-set match with Maria Sharapova. Seriously? Maria won the first set 6-4 and now she got bagled in the second set.

    Li Na is making Maria running all over. Now that Maria’s confidence probably sank down for getting bagled, I don’t think she can come back in the final set. D;

  5. It’s interesting, you know how Soderling hates Nadal’s habit with his underwear, he even angrily imitated Nadal when they played together.

    Kelly, I didn’t see anything disgusting on Azarenka’s head. What is it?

  6. I think Kelly meant Victoria’s headband. I have no comment on it, thought it made her look like Steffi Graf.

  7. Serena is a SORE loser….she always has bad things to say about her opponents…wish she would lose in the QF tom!

  8. Really? I like the headband Victoria’s wearing. lol. And I agree, Serena’s comments after the match are completely inappropriate. I mean, she won the match, there’s no reason to go after the match and say rude things even if the other player was a fault or not. She’s a professional player. There’s something called tennis etiquette, vent about it in private lol.
