Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic seal first-round wins at Wimbledon

Five-time Wimbledon titlist and defending champion Venus Williams was as comfortable as ever on grass and saw off world No.97 Stefanie Voegele to reach the second round. Sixth seed Jelena Jankovic also progressed, with a 6-4 7-6(0) victory over Julia Goerges of Germany.

Third seed Williams defeated the 19-year-old Swiss 6-3 6-2 in 74 minutes. The American took control of the opening set after winning 14 straight points, and three breaks of Voegele’s serve gave Williams the second set.

Jankovic stormed through the opening set in 45 minutes. In the second set Goerges took a 5-2 lead, but the Serb pulled level and raced away to win the tiebreak 7-0.

Jankovic’s grasscourt game is being helped by coach Chip Hooper. JJ didn’t want to say whether Hooper will be her new coach, but she revealed that he’s working on her serves and volleys.

Williams will next play Kateryna Bondarenko, while Jankovic’s next opponent will be Iveta Benesova.

  1. it’s good that JJ is playing well i miss her game..i heard ivanovic had some troubles in her match today also.

  2. Ivanovic’s match against Hradecka was interesting, both players saved match point in the match and it was Ivanovic who ended up successfully using one of her match point. Hradecka played really well, she has super-big serves.

Poor Ana, I don’t know what’s going on with her. She used to be in the spotlight and all, but now she’s playing on Court 4. Hopefully she’ll do well and move into the fourth round, I’d really love to see Ana and Venus play.

Venus seems to be the only one who does not have a tough first round (except she was broken a few times, who thought it was impossible 😛 )

  3. Is JJ kung fu tennis fighting? Is she moving as fast as lighting? 🙂

Wozniacki did not look good in her first round against a 38 year old qualifier. Is the ‘Stella Mc Curse’ already affecting Wozzy?

Alize Cornet slump continues. I think she needs a coaching change.

This year in tournaments that she has played in Chakvetadze has only made it twice to the third round (Rome and Madrid).

I have Ivanovic going down in the third round. I’m assuming she will get there, her first round showing was worse than her first round at RG 09.

  4. She lost, but at least she fought until the very end. It’s still sad though – I wonder why she’s not doing well at Wimbledon lately. Winning seven straight games after being down 3-0 in the second set was amazing – we all probably thought she would’ve lost it in straight sets. In the deciding set, for the third time in a row (like in the match against Cibulkova and Li Na), she has a chance to win a game to stay in the match, to level it 5-5. I thought she could do it after saving four match points.

  5. Teerin, Maria lost this time. 😛 Pity. Wimbledon would be more interesting with her progressing.

Ana’s match was very interesting. Actually, it was her third time to save a match point to advance at Wimbledon.
