Injury cuts Venus Williams’ Australian Open short

8

Venus Williams injured her right hip in the first-set tiebreak of her second-round encounter with Sandra Zahlavova and the injury took toll on her Australian Open appearance, as the fourth-seeded Williams withdrew from her third-round match with seed No.30 Andrea Petkovic. Williams started the match with Petkovic, but pulled out only minutes later.

Williams managed to pull off a three-set win over Zahlavova in the second round, but said that then she sustained one of her most painful injuries. Interesting fact is that Venus had never withdrawn from a Grand Slam match, actually from a stunning number of 250 of them.

This is Andrea Petkovic’s fourth Australian Open, and her best previous result was the second round, which she reached in 2009 and 2010. However, the German did play the fourth round of a Grand Slam – last year at the US Open.

Additional info: As expected, for her third match Venus prepared her third different dress. The cut was similar to the one from her first match, just that this one was more for night, black and glittery, making the see-through feature more prominent.

  1. Too bad Venus can’t compete, she is a great player and opponent. This is a nice chance for Maria to (finally) make a good result at AO.

  2. Oh man, I bet she’s just devastated. It’s hard to work so hard towards a goal and then not be able to really give it your all. Hopefully she’ll heal soon.

As far as her outfit goes, if I had the body for it I’d probably wear that too! 😉

  3. I was routing for Venus to go far in this tournament to bad she was injured..I don’t think she will be in doha, or mexico to defend her titles or even the madison square garden where she won last year against kim…Oh well probably won’t see her till the end feb or march…

  4. Yeah it was like a dress/top. She wore the same dress in blue without the studds on day one, and the australian media said it was so short, so she obviously added tight shorts for the night one. One of my favourite dresses from her, actually

  5. Jacob, it’s pretty unbelievable 🙂 but there are people that agree with you when it comes to the beauty of Venus’ designs.

Hey, I didn’t get to ask you, did you visit the Medibank International? Any pics with your new camera?

  6. the only reason i think that Venus tried to play the match is that she wanted to show off her black dress… its so unlike Venus, when she is not fit she doesnt play at all.
i am disappointed in Venus, even though the dress is fabulous, she shouldnt have played at all than retire
