World No.37 Urszula Radwanska recorded the biggest victory of her career by taking out seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams in the most memorable match of the first day of the French Open. After three hours and 19 minutes, three sets (including two tiebreaks) and 21 breaks of serve, the match ended in Radwanska’s favor: 7-6(5) 6-7(4) 6-4.
The younger Radwanska sister came to Roland Garros with recent claycourt wins over Ana Ivanovic in Rome and Dominika Cibulkova in Estoril, while Williams is nursing a back injury, on top of her always-present Sjogren’s syndrome, and had just one match on red clay this season, a loss to Laura Robson in Rome.
An all-Radwanska third round is now likely, even though Urszula has never been past the second round of a Grand Slam. (photo: Ralf Reinecke)
Brilliant! Ula’s been playing much better lately. This is something of a cherry on her cake I think. 🙂
I’m sad Venus lost 🙁 she had bad claycourt season with back injury and all but hopefully she’ll do well in Wimbledon.
I really, really, really wish that Caroline Wozniacki, who also had terrible claycourt season, would win tomorrow (actually today because it’s already past midnight…). But it won’t be easy by any means ’cause Robson is playing so well at the moment, with victories over Agnieszka and Venus. I just have to wish Laura is having a bad day at the office 😀 But don’t get it wrong, I actually like her game and I hope that in some years she would be in the top 5 and would be serious contender in Slams.
As a dedicated boxer with a son who is a pro mma figher ( Houston Stout ) it really excites me to see a technicion at work. Urszula delivered a stellar performance today that had me on the edge of the seat. Congratulations on a job well done !!!
Pefect performance by Ula ! Can’t wait to see her in the next round. A bad match by Venus on the other hand. She’s getting lower and lower in her career, let’s see how long will she’ll keep it 😉
I did not for see that outcome. I did predict how I think the draw for the French Open will go.
Venus will have to cut her unforced errors, i think her game is still better than the most of the WTA stars, she needs her serve back than she will be back again 🙂 As for Ula, she plays good and safe but mannn uffff she is a robot… only run and get the ball back and wait until Venus does the error … anyway it was a good match
