World No.1 Serena Williams needed just 52 minutes to demolish seed No.18 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-0 6-0 at the US Open and reach her 24th career Grand Slam semifinal. Of the past 23 semis, she has lost just 3, while in her first five matches at this US Open she’s lost just 13 games.

Serena’s next opponent will be fifth-seeded Li Na, who earlier advanced with a 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2 victory over Ekaterina Makarova. Serena is 8-1 against Li in their career meetings. The other two semifinalists will be determined in Wednesday’s action: seed No.10 Roberta Vinci vs. Flavia Pennetta and Daniela Hantuchova vs. seed No.2 Victoria Azarenka. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)

  1. 6-0, 4-0, 40-30: last opportunity for Suarez to get on the scoreboard. Serena fights like crazy, screaming and everything as she were saving a match point in the third set tie-break against Azarenka.

There is a difference between the legitimate desire to win and the intentional (or even worse unintentional) willingness to humiliate. It was her birthday and Serena knew it. Lack of good sense!

  2. Gregoire,

This is professional sports. Not a goddamn Ms. Congeniality Pageant. The heart of the competitor is win everything in their power. Anything less is disrespectful to their sport, fans, their craft, and their opponent.
