In tonight’s second women’s semifinal, seed No.1 and defending champion Serena Williams crushed seed No.5 Li Na in straight sets 6-0 6-3 in one hour and 27 minutes. Their head-to-head record prior to the match was 8-1 for Williams.
Williams dominated in the first set and ended it with a bagel in just 29 minutes. Williams was just too great and Li couldn’t do anything with her too many errors and 3 double faults. The second set was a bit different. The Chinese took a 2-1 lead, but it was short-lived. Williams broke twice to go up 5-2, then Li managed to hold, but it ended 6-3 for the defending champion. It looked like Li just woke up from her slumber in the eighth game of the second set when she finally found her game but it was just too late.
Williams will be playing on Sunday in the finals against Victoria Azarenka. If Serena defeats Vika in their rematch this year she will win her fifth US Open title and 17th major title overall. (photo: © Neal Trousdale)
