Top seed Radwanska stunned in Sydney, Wozniacki out too

Agnieszka Radwanska

No.1 seed at the Apia International Sydney Agnieszka Radwanska lost her first WTA match of the season to Bethanie Mattek Sands, who is back to tennis after a right knee injury layoff and who last week fell in the first round of the Brisbane International, while for Sydney she had to go through three rounds of qualifying and in the first round she went past Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets. Radwanska was up 5-3 in the first set, but then lost seven consecutive games. Mattek Sands didn’t let the victory slip away and eventually celebrated 7-5 6-2.

Another big name falling in the second round was sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki. In the first round the Dane survived the challenge of Julia Goerges, but didn’t capitalize on the many chances she had against always tricky Lucie Safarova, namely a 3-0 lead in the first set and four set points in the second-set tiebreak. The 6-4 7-6(7) loss, however, will probably not bring Wozniacki down too much, as she’s still enjoying her fresh engagement with Rory McIlory. Before the Sydney tournament she said how he asked her parents for permission before proposing and how everything is amazingly set in her personal life. This is the engagement ring! 😉

  1. I don’t know. Players sometimes tank before big tournaments, but if Caroline is serious about improving
her ranking, these are the kind of matches she has to grind out. That was her strength, in part due to
very low unforced error counts and fierce determination. Does she still have the dedication?

  2. JE, everyone’s dedication has ups and downs, I don’t think she’s nowhere near giving up on her career, so she does still have the dedication.

TM, thank you! 🙂 I try to illustrate my posts well 🙂
