Upset-filled Wednesday at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships

Wednesday was a day of many upsets at the 2014 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships as several high-profile players missed out on advancing to the quarterfinals.

First victim was Agnieszka Radwanska as the #2 seed was stopped by Italian Flavia Pennetta in two easy sets.

Meanwhile, two former Dubai champions were having a much better day as Caroline Wozniacki won her match against Annika Beck while Venus Williams showed a commanding performance in her match against Ana Ivanovic, sending the Serbian crowd favorite packing after two quick sets.

The first evening match had the next surprise in store as 2013 Dubai Duty Free Tennis finalist Sara Errani was bested by Sorana Cirstea. The Romanian showed a particular strong performance, hitting over 50 winners during the three-set match.

The final twist of the day was in the books around midnight as Carla Suarez-Navarro upset 2013 Dubai champion Petra Kvitova in an epic 2hr 16 minute match. After a clean performance in the first set, the Czech Wimbledon champ began to unravel as the match progressed, fighting her way back into the third set tie break where the Spaniard finally kept the upper-hand.

Following this upset-filled day, Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki remain the sole Top 10 players still in the draw. Keep checking back tomorrow for more action from the 2014 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships!

  1. Once again excellent job, JJ Tennis! I see your shot of Errani even went viral on Twitter as Sara Errani Official Site mentioned it!

The photo of Venus Williams on the “snowy” court is also amazing. And I like it that you’re updating us from the stands – like the fact that 80% of the people and media left during the third set when Kvitova was trying to stay alive (good that Radek Stepanek was there!).

I have just shared most of the photos on my Pinterest, they really are worth promoting – here in my Action Shots board http://www.pinterest.com/womenstennis/

  2. AfricanTennisnow, thank you! It’s all the work of my photographer Jimmie48. Today he’ll also capture live action in Dubai! 😉
