Are Caroline Wozniacki and/or Alize Cornet able to prevent an all-Williams final at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships?
In yesterday’s quarterfinals, Caroline Wozniacki eased past Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-2 and set up a meeting with her childhood idol Venus Williams (remember this gorgeous old photo of the two?), who earlier won a close two-setter against Flavia Pennetta 6-3 7-5.
Will the Dane manage to get past the fellow former world No.1 in the semifinals? Wozniacki had never beaten Venus in four tries, but amazingly they haven’t faced each other since 2006! In Dubai, for the first time this year has Wozniacki managed to win more than two consecutive matches, having followed an edging of Sabine Lisicki with two straightforward victories, over Annika Beck and Sorana Cirstea.
Only in the beginning of her quarterfinal against world number one Serena Williams did Jelena Jankovic show some resistance, breaking her in the middle of the first set, but the rest was the dominance of the American who progressed to the semis 6-2 6-2, even though, as you can see, there was no shortage of effort from JJ.
Still, the match will only be remembered for the argument between the two, which arose from Serena holding up Jankovic on her serve. Women’s Tennis Blog’s photographer Jimmie48 was there to capture Jankovic being angry at Serena.
The last to make the final four was Alize Cornet, who clawed back from breaks down in both sets to eliminate Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-3. Serena has beaten Cornet in all three of their previous meetings.
Will Wozniacki and/or Cornet manage to score their first points in their head-to-head records against their Dubai semifinal opponents? I think we will have an all-Williams final.
