Jie Zheng - Topshelf Open 2014

Women’s Tennis Blog’s photographer Jimmie48 is back home, having spent four days in ‘s-Hertogenbosch at the Topshelf Open (check out his galleries from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), and today one of his favorite players to shoot, Zheng Jie (don’t you love the energy in the above pic?!), cruised into the title match, together with Coco Vandeweghe.

Coco Vandeweghe - Topshelf Open 2014

The 2008 Wimbledon semifinalist Zheng reached her first grasscourt final with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Magdalena Rybarikova, who is at No.39 ranked 51 spots higher than her. In the following final four match-up, the world No. 69 Vandeweghe dropped one service game in the first set against Klara Koukalova, but converted two of her four break points to take the set, and in the second set raced to a 4-0 lead to soon after finish the match 6-4 6-2. The eighth-seeded Koukalova was the only seeded semifinalist at the tournament.

Zheng and Vandeweghe are tied at 1-1 in head-to-head stats, but those two encounters were far back in 2011.
