Caroline Wozniacki and Mona Barthel, both born on July 11th, 1990, triumphed at this week’s WTA events – the Dane in Istanbul, the German in Bastad.

The fresh 24-year-old Wozniacki won her 22nd career title and her first this year by comfortably beating second seed Roberta Vinci in the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup final, 6-1 6-1. Wearing the white version of the Adidas Stella McCartney Barricade dress, the top-seeded Wozniacki never dropped serve during the title match and lifted the International-level trophy that brought her $43,000 in prize money. Prior to the final, Vinci hadn’t lost a set all week and had a 2-1 record against Wozniacki.

Mona Barthel

Elsewhere, at the Collector Swedish Open, world No.61 Mona Barthel captured her third WTA title by beating Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 7-6(3) in the final. Barthel was unseeded at the tournament, just like all the players she overcame on route to the title. It was a strange week in Bastad, as seven of eight seeds fell in the first round, while no seeds made it to the quarterfinals. Just like Wozniacki, Barthel took home $43,000.

  1. Great photo of Mona! Happy that both players won, but especially Mona. She’s had a rough year and looked very short of confidence. It is encouraging to see her come through some tight matches this week.
