What do the 2014 Baku Cup finalists Elina Svitolina and Bojana Jovanovski have in common? They both won their first WTA title at this very tournament.
The 37th-ranked Svitolina, who is defending champion this week, boasts a 9-1 record in the capital of Azerbaijan, while Jovanovski, who lifted the trophy in 2012, has a 10-1 win-loss record there.
Both players battled for three sets in the semifinals. The fifth-seeded Jovanovski rallied from 4-1 down in the third set to beat Stefanie Voegele 6-2 2-6 6-4, while the second-seeded Svitolina saved as much as eight break points against Francesca Schiavone before triumphing 3-6 6-1 6-4.
The winner of the final will take home $43,000 and 280 ranking points. It will be the first career meeting between Jovanovski and Svitolina. (photo: Jimmie48)
