Former and reigning champion to fight for another Baku title

Elina SvitolinaWhat do the 2014 Baku Cup finalists Elina Svitolina and Bojana Jovanovski have in common? They both won their first WTA title at this very tournament.

The 37th-ranked Svitolina, who is defending champion this week, boasts a 9-1 record in the capital of Azerbaijan, while Jovanovski, who lifted the trophy in 2012, has a 10-1 win-loss record there.

Both players battled for three sets in the semifinals. The fifth-seeded Jovanovski rallied from 4-1 down in the third set to beat Stefanie Voegele 6-2 2-6 6-4, while the second-seeded Svitolina saved as much as eight break points against Francesca Schiavone before triumphing 3-6 6-1 6-4.

The winner of the final will take home $43,000 and 280 ranking points. It will be the first career meeting between Jovanovski and Svitolina. (photo: Jimmie48)
