It was an amazing battle between a 34-year-old and 43-year-old and the younger veteran survived the long encounter to advance to the second round of the US Open. To defeat Kimiko Date Krumm for the fourth time in their four career clashes, Venus Williams fought back from a set down for a 2-6 6-3 6-3 victory in two hours and improved to 16-0 in the first round of the US Open.
It’s hard to believe that as much as 20 years ago, in 1994, Venus made her pro debut, while Kimiko played the quarterfinals of the US Open, and they’re still rocking! After outlasting the oldest player in the draw, the two-time US Open champion Venus will play either Swiss Timea Bacsinszky or Dutch Kiki Bertens.
By the way, we had been speculating which outfit Venus would opt for her US Open matches and the American surprised us by wearing a dress we haven’t seen before. It is similar to her EleVen Herringbone Closed Grip Dress, with scoop neck and keyhole opening, but the print is different. Kimiko was wearing the ruffly asymmetrical Adidas by Stella McCartney Barricade tank and the matching nude skort.
