Serena Williams has achieved it all in tennis! I mean, it’s practically true and it’s the only efficient way of describing the 33-year-old’s accomplishments which would otherwise keep you scrolling down this page for several minutes. Today, the American has added one drop in the ocean of her successes, by edging Sabine Lisicki in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and scoring the 700th match win of her illustrious career. The WTA surprised her with a cake! Hm, I’m just wondering, what would they have done with the cake had Serena not won the match? 🙂
Serena’s reaction:
I saw them bringing out a cake and I thought, ‘Whose birthday is it today?’ But I really had no idea about it, so I’m really excited right now!
The world No.1 is one of eight players in women’s tennis history who have achieved this feat and how hard it is to keep up with everything Serena has done in her career is evident in the fact that even Serena herself doesn’t have a clear picture about her tennis past. Serena was commenting on the accomplishments of the other seven women who won 700 or more matches in their careers, and when asked about Conchita Martinez she said:
Gosh, these people won a lot. Conchita also had one against me!
The truth is that Martinez never actually beat Serena in their five meetings!
Serena’s big sis Venus is next in line to reach the 700 mark, having 688 match wins under her belt. And talking about Venus, check out my March fashion contribution to the WTA, with Venus’ EleVen brand in the leading role. (photo: printscreen via Tennis TV)
