Main-draw action kicks off in Hong Kong

The main draw of the 2015 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open got underway on Monday and fans got to watch the first batch of round-one matches on three courts. There were plenty of spectators at hand, since the tournament designated Monday the “People’s Monday”, giving every interested tennis fan in Hong Kong free admission to the event.

The fans got to see plenty of impressive tennis for free, including a very convincing first match from Monica Puig. The Puerto Rican seemed to be determined to end a difficult season on a high, breezing past Thailand’s Luksika Kumkhum in straight sets. While Puig was showing off her skills on the court, lucky fans also got to meet #2 seed Angelique Kerber in the tournament village.

In the evening, Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova won her first-round match against Irina Ramialison. Meanwhile, another Aussie had some tough luck on the outer courts, as Jarmila Gajdosova lost her first-round match against Yaroslava Shvedova, playing what may have been her last match before her wedding on November 1st.

Tomorrow will see all the big names in action out on the courts as Angelique Kerber, Jelena Jankovic, Sam Stosur & Venus Williams are all scheduled to get their Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open campaign underway on Tuesday.

  1. Jimmie48, amazing photos, as always! BTW, Jarmila Gajdosova has announced on Twitter that she’s closing the season. Now she’s going to relax and prepare for her wedding.
