Kerber & Azarenka reach the final in Brisbane

The first major final of the 2016 WTA season is set as Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka will meet in Saturday’s Brisbane International fight for the champion’s trophy. Both players cleared their semifinals in an impressive fashion.

Kerber swept by Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-3 with the Spaniard having no answers to the German’s calm & focused execution of her game plan today. The second semi was an even more swift affair as Victoria Azarenka expectedly handed surprise semifinalist Samantha Crawford just three games on her way to a 6-0 6-3 victory. Having had a stunning week in Brisbane, Crawford looked visibly intimidated both by Azarenka and the occasion, playing on such a big stage for the very first time.

Tennis fans can look forward to what will most likely be a cracking final since matches between Kerber & Azarenka have a reputation for producing spectacular tennis. Their latest three-set encounter at last year’s US Open was widely regarded as the women’s match of the year and hopefully tomorrow’s final will be every bit as exciting, helping the tournament to end on a big note after what has been a string of very unfortunate withdrawals earlier into the week.

Keep checking back to Women’s Tennis Blog tomorrow as we’ll bring you all the action from the first big final of the new season!
