No.2 seed Angelique Kerber will take on No.10 seed Karolina Pliskova in the US Open final, after they defeated Caroline Wozniacki and world No.1 Serena Williams in the Thursday’s semis, respectively.

This is quite an unexpected title match, as many people were hoping for Serena Williams to move past the memory of her shocking loss last year to Roberta Vinci. Again this year, Serena did not make it to the final and this time, the lady who surprised everybody was Karolina Pliskova. The Czech defeated Serena in straight sets to reach her first Grand Slam final, but what an opponent she will play! Pliskova will face Angelique Kerber who is looking to confirm her newly-acquired world No.1 spot.

Kerber leads the pair’s head-to-head 4-3, but Pliskova won their last meeting in the Cincinnati final and is still keeping the winning streak alive. Llooking back on their previous encounters, Pliskova has won more easily, while Kerber always needed three sets to win.

This will be a very interesting final as both players have a lot to gain: Pliskova will try to reach the Top 5 for the first time and win her maiden Grand Slam, while Kerber will try to extend her lead as No.1 and clinch her second Grand Slam title of the season.

I think that this will also be a very disputed final as Pliskova is on a winning streak, having won the Western & Southern Open, and Kerber is fresh off her Olympics silver medal and her Cincinnati final.

My pick: Pliskova in three sets.
