Simona Halep made herself the queen of the Mutua Madrid Open, having won the title in the Spanish capital for the second year in a row and having become the only player in the tournament history to reach the final three times. In the 2017 final, the Romanian overcame France’s Kristina Mladenovic, who was a superb opponent despite struggling with a back injury. Our photographer Jimmie48 was at the entertaining final, capping a busy week and a half in Madrid. Of course, we also have the photos from the doubles final, in which Yung-Jan Chan and Martina Hingis defeated Timea Babos and Andrea Hlavackova 6-4 6-3.

I was actually rooting for Kiki on this one but Simona saved her best for last. I think her time off with Darren Cahill made her play good last week. Less pressure and more of her style.
I love the new team of Martina Hingis and Yung Jan Chan. They really enjoy each other’s company. I remember when Sania and Martina were this close when they started. I think we can see another team to beat in the next few years. i really like Andrea Hlavackova and it was a pity that her doubles team up with Peng Shuai was short lived. Nonetheless, Timea and Andrea played well the last few weeks. Title at Rabat and Final in Madrid. Another talented new team on the rise.
