The last time Halep competed on tour was in her home country, where she fell in the first round to Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti at the 2025 Transylvania Open. On Saturday, she formally honored her career in front of a packed arena at Sports Festival in Cluj-Napoca, joined by close friends and key figures from throughout her tennis journey.

The exhibition was played on a half-green, half-orange court designed to symbolize Halep’s two Grand Slam titles, won at Roland Garros in 2018 and Wimbledon in 2019.

Alongside Svitolina—who defeated Halep six times in their ten career meetings—other notable guests included Svitolina’s husband Gael Monfils, Halep’s longtime coaches Darren Cahill and Daniel Dobre, as well as WTA chair umpire Kader Nouni, who officiated the event.

To complete the staging, trophies from the most notable of Halep’s 24 WTA singles titles were displayed courtside, and she was presented with a photo collage of career memories by Nouni on behalf of the WTA. “A lifetime of memories, all in one frame,” the 34-year-old commented on the meaningful gift. “Thank you, WTA, for helping to make my retirement celebration at home so special.”

Sports Festival was also attended by several prominent Romanian public figures and sporting legends, including Olympic gymnastics icon Nadia Comaneci and former ATP world No. 1 Ilie Nastase.

In one of the gala’s most touching moments, Halep played a bit with an eight-year-old local tennis prospect, symbolically passing the torch to the next generation of Romanian players. (source: WTA)
