The 2017 Bank of the West Classic is gearing up for its main draw start on Monday as the qualifying stage of the traditional Stanford tournament completed on Sunday.
Veronica Cepede Royg, Danielle Lao, Caroline Dolehide and Marina Erakovic worked their way into the packed main draw, with Erakovic barely escaping an upset at the hands of young American Michaela Gordon in a thrilling match.
While the qualifiers punched their main-draw tickets, plenty of main-draw players were busy preparing on the courts, including five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova, who’s due to start her comeback from injury on Monday night, playing Jennifer Brady.
Aside from Sharapova’s headline return, the fans in California will be in for another treat on Monday as Stanford’s own Nicole Gibbs is due to take on California native Claire Liu, freshly-crowned Wimbledon juniors champion.
