The 2017 China Open started with a bang on Saturday as 2014 champion Maria Sharapova, wearing her new chevron-perforated Nike outfit, won an epic first-round match against Anastasija Sevastova inside the National Tennis Center. Playing a rematch of her 2017 US Open fourth-round encounter, Sharapova won two tiebreaks and fought off a match point in what was a thrilling three-hour match that kept the Beijing crowd on the edge of their seats.
Our photographer Jimmie48 documented every bit of Sharapova’s triumph, as well as victories of tenth seed Angelique Kerber and twelfth seed Petra Kvitova.

I saw Maria’s match. It was good. She’s really on fire. She’s a former champion on this event and I believe she can really go far this year.
