The 2017 edition of the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global kicked off on Sunday with third seed Karolina Pliskova‘s win over fifth seed Venus Williams in the White Group.
Dressed in her new Fila Game Day collection, Pliskova opened the match with a confident hold of serve and continued to stride through the set, with her only hiccup being Williams’ rebreak in the fifth game which the American, debuting her purple EleVen Primitive Dots collection, quickly annulled by a bad following service game. In that first set Pliskova converted as many as three of her four break points, while in the second set she raced to a 4-1 lead and even though Williams saved three match points, the Czech closed out the encounter 6-2 6-2 on her fourth when Williams sent a backhand long.
Keeping her stats clean, Pliskova hit 25 winners to 12 unforced errors, while Williams’ differential was negative, 16 winners to 19 unforced errors.
Kaja got some monkey off her back after losing the number 1 position but she’s playing well again and she’s really aggressive. I know she’ll be a real contender for no. 1 spot after few rounds.
