Right after photographing the semifinals of the Shenzhen Open, our Jimmie48 flew to Australia to bring us coverage from the Sydney International. Sunday at the tournament was marked by the loss of French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, who fell to Ekaterina Makarova 7-6(3) 6-1 in the first round. The 2018 season really didn’t start well for the Latvian, who also lost her opener in Shenzhen, and her only consolation at the onset of the season is her recent victory over new mom Serena Williams in an exhibition match in Abu Dhabi.

Besides documenting Ostapenko’s loss, our photographer also captured Elena Vesnina‘s first-round victory over Lara Arruabarrena. The third today’s singles match was ended prematurely, as Kristina Mladenovic retired with heat illness in the second set against Australian wildcard Ellen Perez.

Stay with us, there’s much more to come from Sydney in the coming days.
