I’m posting this San Jose quarterfinals gallery a bit later because my photographer Jimmie48 is now already in Montreal, ready to shoot the Coupe Rogers présentée par Banque Nationale.
Fourth seed Elise Mertens of Belgium dispatched British number one Johanna Konta in straight sets, despite trailing 5-2 in the first set and suffering a break in the beginning of the second set. Mertens’ semifinal opponent will be fifth seed Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania, who defeated Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, also in straight sets.
On Friday night, Maria Sakkari of Greece upset third-seeded Venus Williams, coming back from deficits in both sets, and will next face American Danielle Collins, who advanced when Victoria Azarenka retired midway through the second set due to injury.
