In a repeat of the 2018 Doha final, Petra Kvitova once again defeated Garbine Muguruza, this time in straight sets, to claim the 2021 Qatar Total Open title.
The fourth-seeded Kvitova needed just 66 minutes to beat fellow two-time major champion Muguruza 6-2 6-1 in Saturday’s Doha final. In their previous meeting, Kvitova recovered from a set down and fought off all seven break points across the second and third sets to conquer the Spaniard and win the 2018 Qatar Total Open title.
After a bye in the first round, Kvitova defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova to book first hardcourt quarterfinal since run to the Doha final last year, then saw off Anett Kontaveit in a match featuring 16 service breaks, broke serve six times to beat qualifier Jessica Pegula in the semis, and finally raced past the unseeded Muguruza.
The 30-year-old Czech has now won 20 matches at the Qatar Total Open, breaking the record of 19 match wins previously held by Svetlana Kuznetsova and Caroline Wozniacki.
