Sharing a photo of the sea and bright blue sky, the Japanese WTA player announced the end of her career on Instagram:

I am retired from playing tennis. It was a journey which I didn’t enjoy ultimately but I’m grateful for all the memories and support I’ve gained and received over the years from the sport. I’m moving on now so you can look forward to new fun projects upcoming in the future.

Mari’s highest singles ranking was No.280 and she has never won a WTA title in neither singles nor doubles. The tennis world largely knows her as the older sister of Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No.1.
