Naomi Osaka will be among four Gen-Z superstars serving as co-chairs for the 2021 Met Gala. The dress code theme will be American independence.
The 23-year-old tennis star is Haitian-Japanese, but since she grew up in the States, her individualism and ever-growing presence in the fashion world perfectly match this year’s theme of the Costume Institute’s glamorous benefit.
Osaka’s aesthetic is as colorful and versatile as her heritage. The four-time Grand Slam champion feels comfortable combining Haitian vibes, Japanese traditional and street style, as well as pieces chosen by well-traveled businesswomen from the Western world. In just a couple of years Osaka has turned her into a designer muse and established herself as one of the best-dressed athletes.
The WTA player’s first reaction to the fact that she would co-host the 2021 Met Gala was:
If I see Rihanna ima pass out.
Besides Osaka, co-costs at this year’s Met Gala will be Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, and Amanda Gorman. Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour will be the evening’s honorary chairs. The event will take place on Monday, September 13.
When it comes to women’s tennis, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were the stars of the previous Met Gala, in 2019.
