Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova joined other world’s biggest celebrities at the 2019 Met Gala evening, an annual red-carpet event most famously known for extravagant fashion. This year’s fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute was themed “Camp: Notes on Fashion” which is inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”.
Serena Williams, who was also co-hosting on Monday evening, paired a neon yellow gown with matching Off-White x Nike kicks.
Remember that Serena wore trainers beneath her Valentino dress for Prince Harry’s and Meghan Markle’s evening wedding reception? At Met Gala, the tennis star didn’t have to hide her comfort, she made it a fashion statement.
Many celebrities transformed their outfits during the evening, so did Serena, switching to a leafy yellow corset, pink shorts and over-the-knee boots matching the top.
Men also indulged in shocking looks for the evening, but Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian stayed on the classic side.
Maria Sharapova was accompanied by her long-time boyfriend Alexander Gilkes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The Russian set aside her minimalist aesthetic and wore a Givenchy dress by Clare Wright Keller, completing the look by extravagant makeup (a bold displaced winged eyeliner and a simple red lip).
