Serena Williams has decided not to travel to the delayed Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist made the announcement at a pre-Wimbledon press conference on Sunday:
There’s a lot of reasons that I made my Olympic decision. I don’t feel like going into them today. Maybe another day. Sorry.
We can’t say that this is a surprise. Back in May Serena stated that she was still undecided over the Olympics because of the complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that Grand Slams were making her schedule busy enough. Moreover, the fact that the Olympic rules restricted her from bringing her daughter Olympic to Tokyo absolutely discouraged her.
The 39-year-old Williams won gold in the singles at London 2012, beating Maria Sharapova in the final. With sister Venus Williams she shares an all-time record having won the women’s doubles gold in Sydney in 2000, Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. (photo: Jimmie48)
